Three asterisks in rectangular brackets are usually used to indicate a gap of any size in a text: [***].
To insert one of these gaps we use the <gap/>
tag, always within the corresponding tag:

If the extent of the laguna can be indicated, the @extent
attribute is used. We will use the term that appears in the reference edition.
The same applies to the optional @reason
